FIRE's
"Nonprofits Online" Workshops for Nonprofit Organizations in Western
NC
This workshop, sponsored by the New Leaf Fund and the Community
Foundation of North Carolina, is for staff members and active
volunteers at nonprofit organizations in western NC. The purpose
of the free workshop is to inform nonprofits about resources
on the Internet which are especially useful.
Topics include:
- Nonprofit Resources: A tour of useful nonprofit
sites. Learn to find free or discounted software (80% or
more off of Windows and others!); get quick answers to crisis-oriented
nonprofit questions; access free translations of foreign
languages; find online funders and take free online fundraising
training; and much more.
- Finding Information: Learn which search engines
are better than others. Get advanced searching tips and
learn how to find information that does not appear on search
engines.
- Government and Community Sites: How to access government
resources online, including funding announcements, helpful
services and area data. Also, learn the basics of how to
request access to public information when it is difficult
to obtain or when access is refused.
- Advanced Use of Data: Once you find data online,
what do you do with it? A real-life research project, which
helped get a $400,000 economic development grant, will be
used as a case study. You'll learn how to use the Census
website, your telephone and a simple spreadsheet to document
the need for your program.
You don't have to be a computer whiz to benefit from this workshop. You just
need to know how to use a mouse, keyboard and Internet browser (like Netscape
or Internet Explorer)—and have a desire to learn! All workshops will be
led by FIRE Executive Director Mark Goldstein.

your interest and we will let you know when there is a workshop in your area.
